Module 5: Universal Design and Accessibility
During my undergraduate program we had several projects that involved Universal Design (UDL) and Accessibility, but more focused on the physical spaces where learning takes place. This unit went a step further in that we had to view the materials we used to teach from the vantage point of someone who may need accommodations. This is especially important in an online learning environment where learners are not located in the same physical space. When your learners are not face-to-face it can be easy to assume that they are just like you. UDL assists us by not making those assumptions and really viewing what you are creating from as many angles as possible.
Closed Caption Video Project
This assignment required each student to create Closed Captioning (CC) to an existing video. There were a few different options available as to how to complete the task. I chose to edit the video myself and directly key in the text without the use of the assisted option. It took quite a bit of time to create the CC for this short video but it was time well spent. I found that I was timing the text to match the rate of speech and insert any [click] other sounds as they occurred.
